The pop-up position is so deep! It’s a very unique combination of a full squat and a deep lunge but, when was the last time you got down that low in regular life?
From the couch, to the car, to the office, to the dinner table. All these chairs are locking you in a position where your knee and hip joints stay at 90 degrees or more.
Why is this a problem? It kills range of motion in all your lower joints: hips, knees, and ankles. But it also makes the muscles that control and protect those joints weaker and as stiff as beef jerky.
Then we expect to jump to our feet and land in a full surf stance while flying down the face of a wave on a tiny piece of foam? Ya right!
But you know what? You used to have great mobility! Look at every child. They live on the floor, squatting to play with toys, sitting cross legged and bending like a pretzel without even a groan. That used to be YOU! Your body remembers and it wants to go back to that. Give it the right stimulus and you’ll get there for sure.
