What Makes A Perfect Pop-Up?

Lower Body Flexibility

When you see a surfer pop-up on one knee or catch their toe it’s most definitely from tight hips and legs. Once unlocked you’ll be able to get your feet under you even in the tightest places.

Core Strength

The term pop UP can be deceiving because it’s 25% up, but 75% driving your knees THROUGH.

The pop-up position is so deep! It’s a very unique combination of a full squat and a deep lunge but, when was the last time you got down that low in regular life?

Why is this a problem? It kills range of motion in all your lower joints: hips, knees, and ankles. But it also makes the muscles that control and protect those joints weaker and as stiff as beef jerky.

Then we expect to jump to our feet and land in a full surf stance while flying down the face of a wave on a tiny piece of foam? Ya right!

But you know what? You used to have great mobility! Look at every child. They live on the floor, squatting to play with toys, sitting cross legged and bending like a pretzel without even a groan. That used to be YOU! Your body remembers and it wants to go back to that. Give it the right stimulus and you’ll get there for sure.
The Dangers Of A Weak Core
You know those massive cannons they have on pirate ships? The ones that fly backwards when you fire them? What would happen if you took that cannon and put it on a 10 foot canoe and fired it? There’d be no more canoe. That’s what surfing with a weak core is like. You can't be explosive and in control if you have a weak core. The way your arms, and legs work all depend on how stable your core is. In fact, you’re more likely to get hurt than you are to catch a bomb wave if you’ve got a canoe for a core.

But on the flip side, if you build a battleship of a core, you’ll be able to explode to your feet, control your board and body on steep drops and keep your balance down the line on the best waves.

There’s no maybes about core strength if you want to have a reliable pop-up.

For 13 years I operated heavy equipment where, including a commute, I would be sitting for 14-15 hours a day!
